G-STIC Shows ICT Delivers People-Centric Sustainable Solutions

Approximately 1000 people from more than 60 countries came together from 23-25 October in Brussels to discuss solutions in support of reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through science and technology. CSCP coordinated the cross-cutting theme on ICT solutions supporting SDGs and sustainable lifestyles. To innovate better systems, we need better methods. Challenges like sustainable logistics systems and circular economic systems require creative, innovative and human-centred approaches.  We use design thinking to focus on human and planetary needs. Finalist Start-Ups Pitch Ideas for Circular Economy at the Green Alley Awards

The six finalists of the Green Alley Award 2017 hail from Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, France, and Germany; on 9 November, they’ll meet in Berlin to live pitch their business models for the circular economy, resource conservation, and recycling. The submitted ideas ranged from biofuels made from recycled car tires to reusable to-go cups for vending machines, from an efficient solar street to innovative packaging materials made of wood and natural adhesives. Kick Off Food Waste Training Programme with German Retailer PENNY

Worldwide, nearly 30% of food is wasted along the agrifood supply chain. The food resources lost and wasted in Europe alone would be enough to feed all hungry people in the world two times over (European Commission 2015). The REFRESH project and the signatories to the voluntary agreements for action it has set up in four pilot countries (Spain, Hungary, the Netherlands and Germany) work hard to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3 of reducing per capita food waste by half.
