Circular Impact Hub Aachen Knowledge Sharing - Connecting – Developing – Experiencing – Implementing Imagine a city where waste is not seen as a problem but as a resource. Where old furniture, building components, materials, and textiles are not discarded but creatively repurposed. This is the principle behind the project Circular Impact Hub Aachen (Kreislauf-WIRK-Statt Aachen), a circular economy centre located in the city of Aachen, Germany. At a time when sustainable economic practices and resource conservation are essential, this interdisciplinary centre brings together citizens, businesses, and the Aachen city administration to collaboratively develop circular solutions. More than a project, the Circular Impact Hub Aachen aims to become a model for sustainable urban development. With innovative approaches, strong networking, and scientific support, the project is set to make Aachen a pioneer in the circular economy. The main goal of the Circular Impact Hub Aachen is to create an interactive and interdisciplinary space where knowledge is shared, innovative ideas are developed, and practical implementation follows. Through open workshops, seminars, interactive exhibitions, and hands-on campaigns, circular economy principles become tangible for all relevant actors in Aachen. At the same time, concrete solutions for material reuse are developed and tested as pilot projects. With its expertise in circular economy, the CSCP supports the Circular Impact Hub Aachen through comprehensive best-practice research and the development of strategic concepts to identify circularity potential. Targeted stakeholder workshops and innovative formats will be developed by the CSCP to enable a creative space where new circular business models can emerge. As part of the project, a so-called “Bau-WIRK-Statt” will be established, based on the concept of an Urban Mining Hub. This pilot project explores how building materials and furniture from demolition and renovation projects can be reused. Through digital tracking tools and strategic partner networks, valuable resources will be identified and reintegrated into the economy rather than lost. This pilot will serve as a blueprint for application in other sectors, such as textiles. The project focuses on the following: Reuse of building materials: Together with the construction department of the city of Aachen, the project aims to optimise deconstruction processes so that materials are systematically recorded and made available for new construction projects. Community workshops on circular economy: Develop hands-on formats that allow citizens to learn how to creatively reuse materials or integrate them into existing processes. Digital tools: Create an innovative platform concept to facilitate the registration and redistribution of materials, ensuring an efficient circular flow of resources. The Circular Impact Hub Aachen is implemented by the city of Aachen in collaboration with Concular and the CSCP. This project is part of the broader Circular Cities NRW initiative under the EFRE funding schemes in North Rhine-Westphalia. This funding programme aims to transform urban regions into circular economies, reducing environmental impact while fostering sustainable growth and innovation.
