Impulses for the Urban Transformation: Insights into the Citizen Living Lab in Wuppertal

The transformation toward sustainability is a global challenge, but one that takes place and can be shaped in concrete places. Many cities are already taking up the challenge, testing new ways of production and consumption, promoting sustainable lifestyles as well as new forms of political, social and economic participation. Moreover, cities are seen as places of creativity and facilitation for the change towards greater sustainability. This publication provides insights into the real-world living lab project in the city of Wuppertal. The report includes a variety of examples of how the urban transformation towards sustainability is initiated by civil society organisations, neighbourhood initiatives, local business networks, but also within urban politics and administration. In the UrbanUp project, researchers together with key actors investigated in which way these examples can lead to a real and impactful transformation.
