Increasing the Rate and Quality of Multi-layer Packaging Waste Plastic and, particularly multi-layer, packaging is crucial for product protection, storage, and transportation. However, recycling this type of packaging is challenging due to the variety of materials used and the adhesive compounds. Consequently, it often contaminates recycling material streams and is incinerated or landfilled. Additionally, the general lack of awareness among end-users about the correct pre-sorting of plastic waste exacerbates the challenge. The path forward requires innovation, adaptation, and a concerted effort to tackle the challenges of multi-layer plastic packaging. This report presents good practices for increasing the circularity of multi-layer packaging through five pillars: sustainable and circular design, circular business models, corporate social responsibility and consumer awareness, waste management/recycling, and circular economy policies and regulations.
