Pupils Are Starting to Implement Their Visions of a Sustainable Future for Their Neighbourhood

In October 2016, a group of 9th grade students set out to explore their neighbourhood and envision what their future could look like.

The Gesamtschule Langerfeld students were given Sustainable Mobility, Biodiversity, Climate Protection and Networking as key words to consider during their mission. Following their exploration, they are beginning to implement their visions of a sustainable future, working together with institutions and citizens interested in contributing to a better life in their shared neighbourhood.

The milestones of the project to date:

  • Pupils and artists created posters of the students’ visions
  • Workshops with experts in the different fields of sustainability
  • Presentations during two sessions of the working committee Klingholzberg/Hilgershöhe where at one session the mayor of Wuppertal was present
  • Presentation of the project and workshops on 23rd of March in the Gesamtschule Langerfeld

The cooperation between the project team, the teachers, the school principal, the pupils, and the institutions participating in the project has been absolutely fantastic throughout all the projects phases from survey to session and event preparation. This successful collaboration was clearly visible on the 23rd of March when close to 150 people came to find out more about the project. The pupils moderated the event, presented the project and were accompanied by the school band.

“It was really a successful event. It would be great if further projects could be developed and implemented.” shared Sabine Münch from Sozialdienst katholischer Frauen e.V. (SkF), who does community work in the neighborhood.

With all the positive feedback and support, the project is continuing, implementing the visions created within the last months. Pupils, interested citizens, and institutions come and work together on solutions for a good life in the neighbourhood in varied working groups, each led by someone with corresponding expertise. The CSCP is continuing to support the whole process via networking, concept development, and sustainability expertise.

The project is called “Wichlinghausen-Oberbarmen zeigen Zukunft” from Bob Kulturwerk e.V. and is part of the programme “NRW hält zusammen… für ein Leben ohne Armut und Ausgrenzung”. The overall project is coordinated by Liesbeth Bakker (ideaalwerk).

If you are interested in supporting the working groups, please feel free to Christoph Hermann!
