How Schools Can Become Catalysts for Circular Food Systems Food system stakeholders from across Europe have come together in our FoodLoops project to explore how schools can become catalysts for circular food systems through hands-on collaboration, local innovation, and biowaste valorisation. In April 2025, the CSCP brought together a diverse group of stakeholders for the second FoodLoops project replication workshop, held in a hybrid format in Wuppertal, Germany and online. Centred on the theme “Replicating the experiences in driving circular school food systems”, the workshop turned theory into action by showing how circular food systems can be rooted in local school communities. A highlight of the workshop was presenting the Manual on Circular Bio-Waste, developed by the FoodLoops project. Drawing on the manual’s hands-on methods, real-life case studies, and tools to identify challenges, the workshop aimed to inspire actors to take first steps toward tackling food waste in schools. Representatives from Lithuania, Poland, and Finland shared their hands-on experiences from the FoodLoops pilot phase. Meanwhile, local actors in Wuppertal, guided by the CSCP and its associated partner Gut Einern, co-developed a real-life action plan to launch a “Round Table on Circular Food”—a multi-stakeholder forum that will bring together the city of Wuppertal, schools, caterers, local farmers, and the Wuppertal Food Council. Other concrete outcomes emerged: Poland plans to pilot festive school menus and improve kitchen staff training; Lithuania will build on-site composting and re-use the compost in school gardens; and Finland plans to work with parents and the agrifood sector to align food education with food waste reduction goals. All countries committed to continuing collaboration and applying the FoodLoops manual—co-developed with CSCP’s support—to replicate circular practices locally. Insights will now directly feed into the first round table meeting in Wuppertal, Germany, scheduled for early summer 2025. For additional questions, please contact Ahmad ur Hafiz.
