Better Bananas for All: Sustainable Banana Alliance Successfully Formed! @bananenbuendnis#ABNB Seven stakeholders have joined together and become the founding members of the German Actions Alliance for sustainable bananas (Aktionsbündnis für nachhaltige Bananen – ABNB). This multi-stakeholder initiative is continuously striving to improve production conditions and make the banana in Germany more sustainable. The problems around bananas are far reaching and cannot be solved by any one stakeholder. They range from insufficient wage-levels of plantation-workers to the dependency on the extensive use of questionable pesticides. The goal of the action alliance is to allow stakeholders to assemble on neutral grounds and explore how pre-competitive collaboration can help address the prevailing problems of conventional banana production. To date, the German retailer Kaufland and importer Fyffes, together with the WWF, the Global Nature Fund (GNF), Oxfam, Südwind, and Fairtrade International, are actively working on the implementation of joint solutions. Next to a memorandum of understanding which outlines the common objectives of the initiative, a common framework for action has been adopted and serves as a base for projects of ABNB members. In addition to facilitating the development process and the meetings for the ABNB, the CSCP is tracking what is happening in the FAO-hosted World Banana Forum. This will allow the members of ABNB to contribute their work on a global scale and facilitate knowledge exchange between national and international levels. Interested stakeholders are welcome to join this forward-thinking and impact-driven initiative to make a change for better production conditions in the banana value chain. Find out more about the ABNB on the recently launched website bananenbuendnis.org and meet the members of the ABNB at the Fruit Logistica, 9.2.2017, 9.30am.
