Kartika has successfully managed various EU-funded projects in three continents, Europe, Africa, and Asia, covering topics such as circular bioeconomy, sustainable circular tourism, sustainable SME development, green finance, and bottom-up approach to multi-stakeholder engagement.

Areas of expertise

Kartika is an expert in implementing mid-to long-term sustainability projects. She has supported Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in different countries, including Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, and Kyrgyzstan. In partcular, she leads capacity building programmes for MSMEs on topics such as sustainable business models, business and financial planning, and sustainable value chain development. To enable flourishing small businesses, she also engages with local authorities and financial institutions to drive local sustainability agendas and access to green finance, which support local livelihood and sustainable enterprises.

Current work

Currently, a major part of her work is focused on circular tourism projects, as is the case with the VERNE project, where she is contributing to developing circular business models. She also oversees the implementation of Communities of Practice (CoPs) and different pilots aimed at engaging local stakeholders in the tourism sector.

Previous experience

Kartika recently brought to a completion the Horizon “CEE2ACT” project, which supported 10 Central and Eastern European countries to establish their national bioeconomy hubs and develop national roadmaps.

In Africa, she oversaw a successful completion of the Horizon 2020 “SteamBioAfrica” project, which was implemented in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. In SteamBioAfrica project, she led a value chain mapping, MSME capacity building programme, commercialisation and market development for solid bio-fuel. This projects follows after the completion of the EU Switch Africa “Sustainable Island Mauritius” and “Green Horticulture at Lake Naivasha/GOALAN Kenya” projects, where she worked to strengthen the capacity of local MSMEs, introducing the concept of sustainable consumption and production (SCP) among MSMEs.

Kartika has co-managed the implementation of the SWITCH-Asia Network Facility 1.0 and the SWITCH-Asia Network Facility 2.0, where she was part of a team which supported around 100 SWITCH-Asia grant projects across different Asian countries.

Kartika is passionate about working with partners from various countries and backgrounds and has worked for many years with WWF Kenya, the Mauritius Tourism Authority, the Namibia University of Science and Technology, the Botswana Institute for Technology, Research and Innovation, the UNISON Kyrgyzstan as well as the Technopolis Group, Geonardo, PNO Innovation, and Greenovate in Europe.

Education

Kartika is a biologist by training. She holds an MBA in International Management with a focus on sustainable management from the University of Applied Sciences, HfWU Nürtingen-Geislingen. Prior to that, she was a journalist and editor at a well-known Indonesian media group.
