Valorising Biowaste Paves the Way for Circular Economy The Urban Bioeconomy Webinar Series, co-organised by our projects HOOP and SCALIBUR and their Horizon 2020 sister projects ValueWaste and WaysTUP!, kicked-off successfully in May 2021. The series brought together field experts from across Europe and started a dialogue on how biowaste can contribute to the overall EU bioeconomy strategy and support cities in becoming circular bioeconomy hubs. With up to 50% of municipal waste being organic, biowaste is a feedstock for safe and sustainable bio-based products. There is still a lot of potential that can be tapped into, however, numerous regulatory bottlenecks hinder the full deployment of solutions in the field of urban biowaste valorisation and re-use. In a webinar series that took a closer look at the entire value chain, from collection to valorisation, participants discussed business and policy issues relevant for the development of a urban bioeconomy in Europe. The CSCP hosted the webinar on Stakeholder Engagement and Citizen Awareness, featuring good practices from Greece and Norway and the importance of changing mindsets and behaviours to move from a linear to a circular model. If you are interested in learning more about some of the legal barriers pertaining to the valorisation and re-use of biowaste, please check out the first position paper by the ROOTS (circulaR pOlicies for changing the biOwasTe System) group. ROOTS is a new initiative of the four sister projects that co-organised the webinars to collectively identify key policy challenges on EU and national levels, organise shared activities and speak with a common voice to European policy-makers and key stakeholders. The webinar series is co-organised by HOOP, SCALIBUR, ValueWaste and WaysTUP! and is a partner event of EU Green Week 2021. For further information, please contact Carina Diedrich.
