Watch the Recording of our #EUCircularTalk: Accelerating Circular Behaviours – How Can Digitalisation Help Us?

What are the missing pieces in the puzzle in order to make circularity the norm among consumers in Europe? What can stakeholders such as retailers, city representatives, policymakers, and civil society organisations (CSOs) do to enable circular behaviours among consumers? How can digitalisation play a supporting role in this process? At the #EUCircularTalk Accelerating Circular Behaviours – How Can Digitalisation Help Us?, held in September 2022, the CSCP brought together experts and stakeholders to discuss these questions and share insights on next steps. The talk focused in particular on the opportunities and challenges of digitalisation when it comes to enabling consumers to behave in a more circular way, also with regard to new digital tools such as the digital product passport, supporting APPs and the role of artificial intelligence. Experts shared their experiences and discussed with participants the implications for the future.

William Neale, Circular Economy Advisor, DG ENV, European Commission, presented the EU Digital Product Passport as part of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products regulation, highlighting how it will be a mandatory tool for a wide range of product groups, ranging from hygiene products to electronics, with the aim of providing consumers with more information on the product’s performance against a set of defined circular criteria.

Cynthia Reynolds, founder of Circular Regions, emphasised the role of digitalisation in organising and creating information by drawing on the Circular Regions’ example.

Markus Terho, Project Manager, Biodiversity and Everyday Life, Sitra, presented the EU-funded PSLifestyle project and showed how a pan-European lifestyle APP supports people to adopt new behaviours, including those related to Circular Economy.

Finally, Tiina Vyyryläinen, EESC member, introduced the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform (ECESP) and highlighted the importance of catering for and engaging people in the circular economy transition.
