Charta for Sustainable Digitalisation

A Framework for Orientation and Action

What does digitalisation mean for social responsibility and environmental impact of companies? How can companies contribute to a good life for their employees and customers, ensure that digital resources are used in responsible ways and use digitalisation to design good workplaces and practices? These are only a few of the many questions that companies, in particular Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME), have to face in the wake of increased digitalisation. The Charta for Sustainable Digitalisation (“Charta Nachhaltige Digitalisierung”), which the CSCP will develop jointly with Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU), aims to address these challenges and supports companies in carrying digitalisation processes in sustainability-informed ways.

For companies the stakes are high when it comes to digitalisation: more efficient production processes and resource-savings due to better data availability, digital business models that allow for less dependency on raw materials, and a more circular approach of value creation. In addition, digitalisation offers better possibilities for networking and creates new opportunities for more employee-friendly workplaces. However, increased digitalisation is taking place in a global context in which environmental and social challenges are peaking as well. In this light, companies have to be conscientious in leading digitalisation processes that contribute towards a good life for all.

In this context, the Charta for Sustainable Digitalisation, will provide companies, particularly SMEs, with a framework for orientation and action. The short but concise document will be developed with the participation of relevant stakeholder groups and also consider existing initiatives on topics of digitalisation and sustainability. In particular, the aim is to fill in the existing gaps related to the lack of clear and comprehensive guidelines on how to design sustainable, and consequently ethical digitalisation processes.

The Charta for Sustainable Digitalisation will be developed in three participatory workshops and tested in a few companies. The CSCP will use its expertise in multi-stakeholder engagement and bring together relevant actors, such as SMEs, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and scientists to define a practical approach on how to become more digital and sustainable at the same time.

If this sounds interesting and you would like to be part of the collaborative and creative process, please let us know by contacting Arne von Hofe.

The Charter for Sustainable Digitalisation is funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt – DBU and will be finalised in early 2021.
