From Awareness to Action: PSLifestyle Empowers Over Half a Million Europeans to Rethink Everyday Living What if sustainable living wasn’t about trade-offs, but about making everyday choices that improve our quality of life? The EU-funded PSLifestyle project developed an interactive online tool, which supported over half a million citizens across Europe to turn climate awareness into concrete, positive action. After three and a half years of collaboration, innovation, and engagement, the PSLifestyle project comes to a close leaving a powerful legacy behind: the Lifestyle Test, co-developed together with citizens and decision-makers from across Europe. The Lifestyle Test is a free, web-based carbon footprint calculator that supports people understand their individual impact on the environment. It’s quick, simple, and engaging. After completing the test, users receive tailored suggestions for lifestyle choices that help them save time, money, and improve their quality of life, all while contributing to greater overall sustainability. By selecting actions, users can build a personalised lifestyle plan and see the positive effect of their choices, both for themselves and for the planet. They can also share their plans and invite friends and family to join, scaling up positive change. By using the Lifestyle Test, users also contribute to sustainability research. Each response feeds into an anonymous data pool i.e., LifestyleData, helping to build evidence for necessary societal change. The result is a unique dataset that informs policy, business, academia, civil society, and other practitioners across Europe. The Lifestyle Test was co-created with residents across the project’s eight pilot countries, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, and Turkey, and later expanded to Norway and Poland. For those outside these countries, a European version is also available. Through the project’s Living Labs, citizens and decision-makers worked hand-in-hand to shape the tool. These workshops provided valuable insights into what motivates people to live more sustainably and how digital tools can support that journey. Beyond the Lifestyle Test, the project delivered an a wide range of outcomes: Practical guidance on running citizen science Living Labs: from ideation and workshop design to implementation and reporting. Insights into how Europeans view sustainable lifestyles and digital engagement. Policy recommendations in the form of briefs to support decision-makers. A rich collection of communication and engagement materials. For a full overview of all project resources, please check out the project’s website: https://pslifestyle.eu/ The project concludes with over 500,000 test-takers and data contributors across Europe, leading to the largest European dataset on sustainable lifestyles. Looking ahead, the PSLifestyle team plans to expand the Lifestyle Test to new countries and continue developing its functions, including tailored versions focusing on biodiversity and the circular economy. The PSLifestyle project was funded under the EU Horizon Programme. For more information, please feel free to reach out to Arlind Xhelili.
