ITM Twin Transformation

The information technology (IT) industry is key to the sustainable digital transformation of the economy, as outlined in the European Green Deal. While large global corporations from the information and communication technology (ICT) sector are already advanced in positioning themselves as transition enablers, the German IT/ICT sector, which consists predominantly of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), has not yet fully leveraged the business opportunities of this transformation at scale and speed.

For years, the CSCP has collaborated with partners and key stakeholders in initiatives and projects like the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative – GeSI, Competence Centre eStandards, Charter for Sustainable Digitalisation, CSR.digital, and the WertNetzWerke competence centre as well as supported companies to place digitalisation as an enabler for strengthening circularity and sustainability.

Building on these experiences, this project funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) focuses on the supply side, supporting German IT SMEs to act as a transformation multiplier and accelerator. This is done by supporting small and medium-sized IT companies in developing their product and service portfolios for the sustainability and circularity growth markets and offering integrated sustainable-digital solutions as part of their core business. The SMEs from the German IT sector participating in the project can potentially access new revenue sources, operate more efficiently and position themselves as attractive employers in the competition for IT specialists while actively contributing to the sustainable-digital transformation.

The project will support a pioneer group of German IT SMEs on three levels:

  • By optimising their own sustainability performance (decrease footprint)
  • By supporting IT companies with sustainability- and circularity-oriented product, service and business-model innovation
  • By supporting front-runners to address market barriers and advocate for supportive market framework conditions on a systems/ policy level.

The CSCP implements the project in collaboration with BITMi, Germany’s only association representing exclusively SMEs in the IT sector.

The 18 month project, launched in January 2023, is funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation DBU (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt).
